Post-Construction Cleaning Checklist for Contractors

For a general contractor, the last impression of a project often comes from the cleaning. Owners and inspectors walk in, and the first things they notice are dust on window sills, paint on glass and haze on new floors. A good post-construction clean helps the walkthrough go smoothly and gets the punch list closed faster.

Post-construction cleaning is usually done in phases. Here is a checklist contractors can use to plan the work and communicate expectations with a cleaning crew.

Phase 1: Rough clean

The rough clean happens after the main construction is done but before final finishes and fixtures are complete. It removes the heavy debris so trades can finish without working in a mess.

Checklist: remove large debris, packaging and scrap; sweep and vacuum all floors; remove stickers and labels where finishes are complete; wipe down surfaces with heavy dust; clean out tubs, sinks and cabinets of construction debris.

Phase 2: Final clean

The final clean happens after all trades are finished. This is the detailed clean that makes the space ready for the owner.

Checklist: dust from top to bottom, including ceiling fans, light fixtures, vents and returns, tops of door frames and cabinets; clean windows, frames, tracks and sills; remove paint, caulk and adhesive from glass and fixtures where safe; wipe cabinets inside and out; clean appliances, countertops, sinks and plumbing fixtures; clean bathrooms completely; wipe doors, switches and outlet covers; vacuum and wash floors, and clean baseboards.

Phase 3: Touch up before the walkthrough

Between the final clean and the owner walkthrough, trades often return for small fixes, leaving new dust or footprints. A quick touch up clean the day of or the day before the walkthrough keeps the space looking its best.

Do not forget the floors

New VCT and other resilient floors in commercial projects usually need an initial strip or deep scrub and several coats of finish before the building opens, because construction dust and grit damage unprotected tile quickly. Carpet may need vacuuming and extraction to remove fine drywall dust.

Having one crew that handles both the construction clean and the floor finish saves coordination time. Deep Cleaning High Quality has floor machines, an auto scrubber, burnishers and a carpet extractor, so the floors can be finished as part of the same project.

Room by room details that inspectors notice

Kitchens: inside cabinets and drawers, appliance doors and seals, range hood filters, backsplash grout lines, and the top of upper cabinets.

Bathrooms: grout haze on tile, caulk lines, mirrors, shower glass, fixtures, exhaust fan covers and the floor behind the toilet.

Windows and doors: glass on both sides where reachable, frames, tracks, thresholds, hardware and door tops.

Floors: corners and edges, under appliances when possible, and baseboards. New hardwood, tile and vinyl each need the right cleaner so the finish is not damaged.

Mechanical: vent covers and return grilles, which often hide a surprising amount of drywall dust.

Commercial projects add restroom partitions, drinking fountains, storefront glass, elevator interiors and stairwells. Writing these into the scope avoids surprises at the walkthrough.

How long post-construction cleaning takes

Time depends on the size of the project, the level of dust, the number of windows and whether floor finishing is included. A small residential remodel may take a day, while a new commercial space can take several days with a full crew. Sharing square footage, photos and the handover date early lets the cleaning company assign enough people.

Tips for contractors

Schedule the cleaning crew early and share the timeline, since post-construction work is often squeezed at the end. Make sure water and power are available. Tell the crew which surfaces are delicate or still need protection. Plan one final clean after the last trade, not before.

Common questions

01When should the cleaning crew be scheduled on a construction project?

Book early and confirm dates as the project moves. A rough clean after major work and a final clean after the last trade are the most common phases.

02Do you clean commercial and residential construction projects?

Yes. We work with contractors on commercial spaces and homes.

03Can you strip and wax the new floors too?

Yes. Floor stripping, waxing and burnishing is our main service, so we can finish the floors in the same project.
