School Floor Care: Planning Strip and Wax Around Summer Break

School floors take more punishment than almost any other commercial floor. Hundreds of students walk the same corridors several times a day, cafeteria tables roll in and out, and sand and clay come in from playgrounds and bus loops. By the end of a school year, even a well maintained floor is ready for a full strip and wax.

The challenge is time. Most schools have one real window, summer break, plus shorter chances during winter and spring breaks. Planning the floor work well makes the difference between shiny hallways on the first day of class and a rushed job that still smells of finish when teachers arrive.

Why summer break is the main window

A full strip and wax requires closing the area, removing furniture, stripping, rinsing, and applying several coats that must dry and cure. Hallways need to stay empty while that happens. During the school year that is very hard to arrange, so most districts schedule full strips for summer and save winter break for touch ups and recoats.

Plan the order of work

Start with rooms that need furniture moved, such as classrooms and offices, and work toward corridors, so finished hallways do not get walked on by crews carrying desks.

Coordinate with other summer projects. Painting, ceiling work, HVAC repairs and technology installs often happen at the same time. Floors should be refinished after messy work is done, or protected if other trades must cross them.

Leave the cafeteria and gym entrances for a time when deliveries and sports camps are not running.

Leave time for curing

Fresh finish needs time to harden. Light traffic can usually return after several hours, but furniture and rolling carts are best kept off for longer when possible. Build a buffer of a few days between the last coat and teacher move in.

A real example from Kannapolis, NC

In September 2026 our crew stripped and refinished school corridors in Kannapolis, NC (Cabarrus County). The work was done while the building was empty, overnight, with our own floor machines, auto scrubber and burnishers. The photos from that job show the before, during and after on long VCT hallways with colored border tiles, which is the kind of floor most North Carolina schools have.

That project is a good reminder that strip and wax does not always have to wait for summer. With night scheduling, corridors can be refinished during the school year too, section by section.

Keep the shine through the school year

Give custodial staff a simple routine: daily dust mopping, damp mopping with a neutral cleaner, clean entrance mats, and burnishing in high traffic corridors. Plan a scrub and recoat around winter break for the busiest hallways, and the full strip the next summer.

A sample summer timeline

Week 1 after students leave: custodial staff clear classrooms, stack chairs and remove small items. Other trades start messy work such as painting or ceiling repairs.

Weeks 2 to 4: floor crew strips and refinishes classrooms and offices wing by wing, moving furniture back after the finish has had time to dry.

Weeks 4 to 6: corridors, lobbies and the cafeteria are stripped and refinished, usually after other trades no longer need to cross them.

Final weeks: burnish where needed, touch up any areas damaged by late repairs, and leave several days before teachers return so finish can cure.

Every school is different, but a written plan like this makes it easy to coordinate custodians, contractors and the floor crew.

Do not forget carpet and entrances

Many schools also have carpet in libraries, media centers and offices. Summer is the right time for hot water extraction, because carpet has hours to dry. It is also a good time to pressure wash entrances, bus loops and sidewalks, so students do not track a summer of dirt onto the new finish on day one.

Common questions

01Can school floors be stripped during the school year?

Yes, with night work done in sections. Areas are closed overnight and the finish dries before students arrive. Full building projects are easier during breaks.

02How far ahead should a school book summer floor work?

As early as possible, ideally in spring, because many schools want the same weeks.

03Do you move classroom furniture?

Tell us when you request the estimate. Furniture handling changes the time needed, so we include it in the plan and the quote.
